Color Choice
Colors for Interior Design
Colors are essential for interior design. Using colors, we can give a room or space the desired mood, style, and comfort.
When painting, we can highlight one of the walls with a different color, giving it a unique style. A wall painted in another color is a simple and effective way not only to enliven the space but also to trick the eye. Depending on the chosen color, the human eye perceives the room's size differently than it actually is. When deciding which wall to highlight, we must also choose the best color.
Below are some tips to help you decide which wall to highlight and what color to paint it.
The Warm Color Theory
Orange, yellow, and red are considered warm colors. These colors tend to make spaces feel smaller. If you decide to use a warm color for an accent wall, choose the wall that is most noticeable and can regulate the perceived dimensions of the room. Warm colors are better suited for long and narrow bedrooms, as they create the impression of a more proportionate area.
The Cool Color Theory
Cool colors – green, blue, and purple – tend to make spaces feel larger. Using a cool color, you can make a small room appear wider. Another option is to use the ceiling as an accent wall. Painting a low ceiling in a cool color creates the impression of higher ceilings.
Determining the Visual Temperature of a Room
Another important factor to consider when choosing an accent wall and its color is the visual temperature. This does not refer to the actual air temperature in your bedroom. If you're unsure about your bedroom's visual temperature, follow these simple tips:
- - Bedrooms facing east or north: Such bedrooms are usually considered cold zones, so warm shades will add warmth to the space.
- - Bedrooms with windows facing west or south are considered warmer spaces since they are generally brighter and sunnier. Sunlight entering the room creates the impression of a bright space. In this case, you can choose cool paint shades to visually balance the room's temperature.
